Lagoon Safari — Mr Adventure, Sri Lanka
Pottuvil Lagoon, near Arugam Bay

Lagoon Safari

A slow boat through the lagoon just north of Arugam Bay, threading between mangrove stands and open water. It is the gentlest wildlife trip we run and, for photographers, often the most rewarding one.

What to expect on the Lagoon Safari

Crocodiles are the draw most people arrive for, and you will almost certainly see them — sunning on the banks or holding position just under the surface. Water buffalo wade through the shallows, monkeys work the treeline, and elephants come down to drink often enough that it is worth keeping your camera ready rather than packed.

The bird life is constant: kingfishers, egrets, herons, sea eagles overhead. Because the boat moves quietly and sits low, you get much closer than a jeep ever would, and the water stays glassy enough at either end of the day to double everything in reflection.

Trips run at sunrise or sunset, when the light is best and the animals are most active. It takes roughly two hours door to door, which makes it easy to fit around a surf session or a travel day.

Lagoon Safari — common questions

How much does lagoon safari cost?

It depends on how long you want it and how many of you there are, so we quote each booking individually rather than publishing one price. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and you'll get a fixed, all-in price — usually within minutes. No booking fee.

How do I book?

Entirely on WhatsApp — there's no form to fill in and no deposit to hold a date. Tell us what you want and when, we confirm availability and the price, and that's the booking. If plans change, message us as early as you can and we'll rearrange it.

Where do you pick up from?

We collect from wherever you're staying in and around Arugam Bay and drop you back afterwards. If you're further along the coast, tell us where and we'll let you know whether it works for the start time you want.

Is it a private trip or shared with other guests?

Private. The jeep or boat is yours and your group's alone, and the start time is whatever suits you rather than a fixed departure. That's the main reason to book this rather than a seat on a scheduled tour.

What should I bring?

Wear something you don't mind getting a little damp and bring insect repellent — the mangroves earn their reputation at dusk. The boats are stable and the water is calm, so it suits children and non-swimmers, but tell us ages when you book so we bring the right jackets.
