Hikkaduwa
Surf breaks, a coral sanctuary and the liveliest nightlife on the south-west coast.
About Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa built its reputation on two things: a reef you can snorkel straight off the beach, and a beach-bar scene that runs later than anywhere else on this coast. The coral sanctuary is shallow enough that you don't need to be a diver, and green turtles feed close in.
The surf suits improvers more than complete beginners — the breaks are reefy. Beginners are better off a little further south at Weligama.
