About Nuwara Eliya
The highest town in Sri Lanka, and the coolest — genuinely cold at night, which catches people out. The British built it as a hill retreat and it still looks the part: mock-Tudor hotels, a racecourse, a golf course and a boating lake, all sat in the middle of tea estates.
It's the centre of Ceylon tea country, and a factory tour here is the real thing rather than a tourist set-piece. Horton Plains and World's End are a short drive on, best done at first light before the cloud closes in.
Getting to Nuwara Eliya
A long climb whichever direction you come from — the last stretch is steep and winding. Bring a warm layer; it's often fifteen degrees cooler than the coast you left that morning.
